Introductions

Please post a little about yourself. Who you are, what you do and why you are taking MLED 530.  Also, anything else you think it would be helpful for me to know about you.  Remember this is a public blog so don't post anything you wouldn't be happy having the world read.

  1. Hello,
My name is Amanda. I taught at Smithfield High School in the English department for ten years. After earning my M. Ed. in Literacy I changed positions and I currently teach Literacy/Reading at Gallagher Middle School. I am taking MLED 530 in order to fulfill the requirements to earn middle-level extension on my English certification.

  2. I am Corinne, and I am currently the PreK-8 Spanish teacher at Quest Montessori School in Narragansett. I am in the cohort to be certified for middle-level Spanish. I am taking this class to either improve my curriculum to be a better Spanish teacher at Quest or to be more marketable for other positions in the state.

  3. Hi, I'm Biancha. This is my third year in Woonsocket doing long term positions at both middle schools. I have an MAT degree in elementary education, but after working in the middle school environment, I've decided to pursue my MLED certification. My content major is Spanish, but I am thinking about math.

  4. Hi, I'm Abigail. I teach in a 6th/7th grade loop at Barrington Middle School. I have a MAT in elementary education and an MED in math education. I taught at the 4/5 level for ten years until moving to the middle school last year. I have enjoyed teaching at the middle level and am pursuing the MLED to earn an extension to my certification with a content focus of math and language arts.

  6. Hopefully this works out this time! My name is Linda Wilson and I have been teaching at West Bay Christian Academy for the past 13 years. I taught first grade for 11 years then was asked to move up to do seventh and eighth grade math as well as eighth grade science. Teaching is my second career as I previously worked as a registered dietitian. I hope to earn certification in both middle school science and math.

  7. Hi everyone. My name is Marissa Taibi and I am not currently teaching this school year; however I would like to return to the middle school classroom once I earn my middle level certificate. I have six years experience teaching grades 6-8, as well as several years of experience in working in the biotech industry as a Clinical Research Coordinator through which I educated physicians on the use of orthobiologic products used in spinal fusion surgeries. I enjoy being in the classroom (whether I am a teacher or a student) and look forward to learning some new literacy strategies in order to better serve my future students.

    2. I was going to sign up, but can someone tell me what the rate is that we should be paying? Is it the $25 or the $85? Big difference!

    3. Hi Lisa,

      I agree big difference!

I had checked with Dr. Horwitz during our lunchtime last class and she said we should chose the $25 option.

  8. Hi, I'm Michelle DeFeo. I have an MAT in Elementary Education. I taught second grade for a few years before my oldest daughter (now 12!!!) was born and have not been full-time teaching in a classroom since. I have done some substitute teaching on and off throughout the last ten years and have also been working in early intervention screening for the last five years. I am hoping to earn my middle level certification in both science and social studies and return to the workforce in the near future.

  9. OK, now that I know I've figured this out, I will introduce myself by saying that I am a second year ELA teacher at Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School in Coventry; hired on two, consecutive 1-year assignments. I am certified elementary 1-6, so I am trying to better my chances of staying in the middle school environment, since I have fallen in love with the level! I subbed for six years, did 7 long-term subs, and am very grateful to finally have a classroom of my own. I am quite passionate about Christian Contemporary Music -- I am on the Board of Directors of Fuse Christian Concerts -- think uplifting, God-centered, clean rock concerts -- that's the primary focus. These are NOT your grandmother's church service shows! :-) I am married and have two children (Catie - senior in high school, and Joe, freshman) and two step-daughters who are both married and have gifted us with 5 grandchildren! My first career was public relations; I have a music background (and have sung on stage my whole life - until this pesky throat issue!); I stayed home for 10 years with my children and went back for the MATC during that time. So, here I am! Back in school...never really left, I guess! That's me in a nutshell.

  10. I am a second full year teacher at Blackstone Valley Prep Middle School in Lincoln, RI. I had the opportunity to start there in December of 2011, so this is technically my third year at the school. I am certified for elementary and special education, giving me a technical certification of K-8. I taught 5th math for a year and a half, and this school year moved up to 6th grade. I am taking this course to be able to stay in the middle school setting, hopefully with a specific math certification.
